SUMMARY
This XP-LIVE webinar by Daniel Parsons of Interflow Engineering, LLC, provides an introduction to integrated river and storm water flood modeling utilizing one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D), fully dynamic simulation of conveyance systems. These systems include unconfined overland flow, underground pipes, inlets, culverts and bridges, open ditches, flood detention structures, rivers, levees, dams, and the associated appurtenances.

The presentation, which was given recently at the Florida Floodplain Managers Association Annual Conference in April 2013 gives an overview of fully dynamic, 1D and 2D hydrology and hydraulic analysis for river and storm water conveyance systems modeling, including examples of when 2D modeling approaches may be preferred as compared to traditional 1D modeling. Concepts include data requirements to support 2D modeling, advantages and disadvantages of 2D modeling approaches, the use and application of 2D and coupled 1D/2D models to support planning and design services in both urban and riverine environments, and 2D model result analysis and inundation mapping. Discussion includes the consideration of underlying data needs, hydrologic methods, FEMA criteria, and tips on establishing stable, dynamic models.
